We only engage in what is called “White Hat” SEO techniques. “Black Hat” is summarised as techniques that fool search engines and once found out by a search engine could get you black listed making that particular url useless from thereon. They sometimes give a quick result but are gone as quickly as they came. White Hat is basically the principles laid out by some search engines as good practise. 

We will do “on page” (on the website itself) and “off Page” (external links) work as part of the SEO process. There is no hard and fast rules and what direction we take will depend on the results we get. Note the greater the competition there is the longer and harder it is to get to the top. Some of your competitors may also be spending a lot on PR and marketing to improve links and positions. Some keywords are not worth the effort. Generic words may not also get you the traffic you want anyway.

  • The more words someone enters in a search the more specific they are and the more they usually know what they want so usually the closer they are to buying. So long tail keyword phrases can provide goo quality traffic.  

Eg “toys” very generic they could be looking for anything. If you specialised in “antique toys” then this would be a better phrase. Also if you are a local business and want to gain local customers then making sure your keywords include UK, Cheshire or Knutsford would be a good idea. So taking the example “antique toys Knutsford” This may be a low volume search but the search is so specific its going to be good traffic.

We will look at the volume of searches done on the chosen keywords. This is the potential traffic that could come to your site. If you get to page 1 in the major search engines then there is a good chance you will get a good proportion of it. Note position 1 will get a higher percentage than position 10 but being on page 1 significantly increases your proportion of all the traffic. Direct mail response is usually about 3% and this is not as targeted. The main difference with searches is the quality of the traffic, its more qualified. People are looking or are interested in what they are searching for so the response should be much greater. Even with this said instead of 3% lets assume 1% click on a link.

  • If the total searches done in a month was lets say 100,000 for you keyword phrases and you are on page 1 for most then lets guesstimate on the conservative side that 1% of this should click on your link. This would equate to 1000 extra hits to the site. This is 1000 qualified leads that are searching for your products. 

Obviously some keywords have more or less traffic. Its just an illustration to give you an idea of the potential traffic you could get. Any seasonal variances should also be taken into account. Taking a search volume of Christmas trees in December will not give you the same volume in January.

When picking keywords we want a spread of competitive keywords. So instead of a tap being turned on full at some point, we start to get results and an improvement of results gradually. We think this helps you start to deal with the traffic, its gradual for Google so looks more natural and means you are not having to keep the faith for along time with not much to show for it. Also this spread helps you get better rankings on other phrases. If you need some instant results a PPC campaign may be a better option even though its more costly for 6 months until natural SEO takes over.

In relation to other mediums of advertising if you placed an advert in a magazine even if it was a specialist magazine it’s a one off hit. Searching is getting people interested right now in your products.  The cost of art work and advertising space makes SEO very good value for money.
